Dr. Eric J. Roman is a dentist, entrepreneur, and leadership advisor who helps dental organizations develop stronger associates, clearer systems, and healthier cultures. He has built three dental companies, lost one, and sold another. He and his partner Josey Sewell now coach organizations representing more than three billion dollars in combined annual revenue, and he has personally developed more than a thousand dentists.

Building and Rebuilding Dental Organizations

Dr. Roman studied chemical science and business administration at Florida State University before earning his DDS from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 2007. He completed an Advanced Education in General Dentistry residency at the Fayetteville Veterans Affairs Medical Center.

In his first venture he helped grow a Fayetteville-area platform from roughly $2 million in year one to $13 million in annual care by year three across three practices. Eighteen months in, he cut his own clinical schedule to train the associates he had hired. The decision cost him income immediately and became the work that would define the rest of his career.

A legal and regulatory dispute involving the management of those practices eventually cost him his position, the practices, and his financial security. It also left him convinced that growth without clear governance, aligned incentives, and protected clinical judgment is fragile.

He co-founded CarolinasDentist next and served as its CEO through its formative growth years. The rebuild wasn't a clean redemption. Determined to build something that looked nothing like the company that had failed underneath him, he threw out the performance standards along with everything that deserved to go. Nine of the first twelve associates he hired left within eighteen months. A longtime assistant who had worked beside him through the first collapse told him plainly that the new business was in danger because he had stopped caring about performance. He credits her with moving him from a leadership style built on pleasing people to one built on serving them.

The company grew to seven locations and nearly $30 million in annual revenue before entering a long-term affiliation with Light Wave Dental Management in 2019. Light Wave didn't make the highest financial offer. Dr. Roman selected them because their leadership valued the culture, associate development model, and clinical systems CarolinasDentist had built. That experience now shapes how he helps owners evaluate transaction partners, protect what matters to them, and think past the headline price.

Developing Associates and Clinical Leaders

After CarolinasDentist, Dr. Roman and Josey Sewell co-founded Traction for Dental and joyFULL People. The DEO acquired both companies in 2021, and he became a partner and product leader there. Today he and Sewell lead joyFULL Growth and Dental Associate Growth.

Their work addresses a problem common to every growing dental organization. Associates get judged against expectations nobody ever made explicit, supported by coaching that never became consistent, and held responsible for systems that were never actually built. The response pairs documented expectations and clinical systems with a recurring rhythm of measurement, feedback, and development. The goal is to give associates a clear path toward clinical, personal, and financial growth while helping owners build practices that don't depend on their constant presence.

High Love and High Accountability

Dr. Roman's leadership philosophy is built on what he calls high love and high accountability. Caring about people doesn't mean lowering expectations. It means making the standard clear, telling the truth, supporting development, and giving people the tools to succeed. A leader who avoids a hard conversation leaves a person without the information they need to improve.

He also co-founded 1Life System, which applies structured reflection, planning, and accountability to purpose, health, relationships, and financial well-being. It grew directly from discovering that a successful exit couldn't repair the parts of life he had neglected while building the business. Every ninety days he opens his own home to The Collective, a referral-only gathering of twenty five to forty dental leaders where health, marriage, sleep, and purpose get the same attention as production. More than two hundred people have come through it.
