In 1981, the Owens-Illinois glass plant, then the sixth-largest in the world, shut down in southern New Jersey. A wave of business closures and economic decline followed. That same year, Dr. Steven Rasner opened a private dental practice in one of the most economically disadvantaged regions in the country.

More than four decades later, that same practice generates over $5 million annually, operates on a four-day workweek, and maintains a 100 percent fee-for-service model, with no insurance participation and just one associate.
