Foundation Dental Alliance Faculty | Patient Acquisition and Practice Growth

Matt Brown is the co-founder and chief revenue officer of Energize Group, a dental growth company that connects patient acquisition with appointment booking, front-office performance, treatment presentation, and collections. Energize serves hundreds of dental practices nationwide and books more than 20,000 patient appointments each month through its marketing programs, in-house outbound call center, and direct team coaching.

Brown also co-hosts Dental Unfiltered, a sponsor-free podcast covering practice ownership, growth, leadership, and the decisions that determine long-term performance.

As a Foundation Dental Alliance faculty member, Brown helps dentists understand what happens between marketing spend and realized production. His work covers capacity planning, lead response, appointment conversion, front-desk training, treatment coordination, data visibility, and accountability.

From Military Service to Business Building

Brown enlisted in the United States Army in 2009. He served with the 82nd Airborne Division at Fort Bragg as a paratrooper and parachute rigger, later becoming an Army Combatives Instructor with Special Operations Combatives Program certification. He continued serving in the Maryland National Guard until his honorable discharge in 2015.

The work demanded precision and personal responsibility. A rigged parachute either performs as intended or someone faces the consequences. There's no partial credit and no version of good enough. Brown carried that standard into every business he built afterward.

In 2012 he founded Team JBM Wilmington, a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu academy that grew to roughly 350 members in under two years. The academy gave him direct experience developing instructors, retaining members, and building systems that didn't depend on one person doing everything.

Brown and Ryan Raybould founded Energize Group on August 19, 2019 with approximately $600 and no outside capital. The company has since grown from two founders into a national dental growth organization serving hundreds of practices.

Responsibility Beyond the Lead

Energize Group was built around a simple problem. Generating patient inquiries means very little if nobody responds quickly, schedules the appointment, presents treatment effectively, or follows up.

Three commitments separate the model from the marketing firms most practice owners have already tried and fired.

  • He owns the conversion, not just the lead. Energize runs its own outbound call center that intercepts every inquiry before it reaches the front desk, then coaches front-office and treatment coordination teams and uses practice data to identify where potential patients are being lost.
  • The results get benchmarked externally. Energize is a Dental Intelligence Diamond Certified Partner, and Brown uses production, patient growth, treatment presentation, and conversion data to determine whether the work produced an actual business result.
  • He turns away revenue on ethical grounds. Before launching a campaign, the company evaluates whether the practice has the clinical capacity, appointment availability, equipment, and team systems to handle the demand. In one documented case, Brown stopped an implant campaign because the practice wasn't equipped to support the patients it would have generated.

Cancer, Limb Loss, and Veterans' Advocacy

Brown was diagnosed with bone cancer in May 2021. On August 1, 2021, his left leg was amputated above the knee at Duke University Medical Center. He spent seven months in a wheelchair while continuing to lead his company and raise two children with his wife, Jayne.

His recovery became a prolonged fight with the Department of Veterans Affairs over access to an appropriate prosthetic system. After more than two and a half years of failed fittings, communication breakdowns, expired purchase orders, and delays, he finally received the prosthetic socket he needed in May 2024.

On November 20, 2024, Brown testified before the House Veterans' Affairs Subcommittee on Health during its hearing on VA amputee prosthetic care. He has continued advocating for veterans' access to prosthetic devices that support exercise, recreation, and ordinary daily life.

There's no such thing as recreational prosthetics. It's just prosthetics for enabling what everyone else gets to enjoy as normal life.

Faculty Focus

Brown's work with Foundation Dental Alliance covers:

  • Dental practice growth and patient acquisition systems
  • Front-office response, scheduling, and appointment conversion
  • Treatment coordination and case acceptance
  • Capacity planning before increasing patient demand
  • Performance measurement and team accountability
  • Leadership through adversity and veterans' advocacy

Brown knows what happens when a system looks acceptable on paper and fails the person depending on it. That experience shapes the standard he brings to Foundation Dental Alliance. Every claim should connect to a real patient, a real appointment, and a result the practice can measure.
