Foundation Dental Alliance Faculty | Leadership Under Pressure and Team Alignment
Paul Adamson is a leadership advisor, ocean captain, and author who helps founders and leadership teams stay calm, decide clearly, and keep people aligned when pressure rises. He sailed 33,000 miles as captain for Formula One entrepreneur Eddie Jordan, helped rebuild Oyster Yachts from administration to more than £185 million in forward orders, and now works with dental practice owners and their teams across the United States and the United Kingdom.
He rejects the motivational speaker label deliberately. His positioning is Trusted Advisor, and the distinction is the whole point. He doesn't arrive to inspire people and leave. He stays long enough to resolve the actual problem.
As Foundation Dental Alliance faculty, Adamson teaches the part of practice ownership nobody covers clinically. Leading under pressure without letting the pressure show, creating alignment before imposing strategy, reducing the owner bottleneck, and growing without losing the identity the practice was built on.
Leadership Learned at Sea
Adamson grew up in Chester, England, and started sailing on the River Dee at eleven. The pull was strong enough that he'd tell his mother he'd missed the school bus, strap his daggerboard, rudder, and sail to his back, and cycle ten miles to the sailing club. The Dee is tidal, shallow, and unpredictable, which made it a reasonable first classroom for reading variables and deciding fast without guarantees.
His father died when he was 17, after years of battling alcoholism. Adamson didn't find the conventional routes for processing it. He ran away to sea.
After my dad died, I knew I needed to sort out my head. The sea was the only place I knew how to do that.
Paul Adamson
He earned his RYA Yachtmaster Offshore qualification at 18 and became a Yachtmaster Instructor at 19, then graduated from Southampton Solent University with First Class Honours in Maritime Studies. His career took him through Formula One Sailing, Clipper Ventures, a Mini-Transat campaign, the Fastnet, and Oyster Yachts, where he was selected to skipper an Oyster 56 across the Atlantic. He met Dr. Audrey Adamson, a dentist from County Mayo, on that passage. She became his wife.
Those years built a specific kind of intelligence before he ever sat in a boardroom. Leadership at sea isn't theoretical. Conditions change without warning, information is always incomplete, and responsibility can't be passed to somebody else. You stay steady, you communicate clearly because confusion costs lives, and you make the best available decision before certainty arrives.
Thirty-Three Thousand Miles With Eddie Jordan
In October 2011, Adamson missed a call while at a go-kart track in North Wales. Eddie Jordan had left a voicemail.
Paul, this is your lucky day. Call me back now.
Eddie Jordan OBE, October 2011
Jordan was building LUSH, the first Oyster 885 ever constructed, and planning to sail her around the world as flagship of the inaugural Oyster World Rally. Adamson and his wife oversaw the build, recruited the crew, and departed Southampton in November 2012. LUSH was the first boat in the rally to complete the circumnavigation. Across the full 22-month deployment with the Jordan family, Adamson logged roughly 33,000 miles, including a 2,250-mile passage from Reunion to Cape Town across the Agulhas Current in 30-knot north-easterlies with building seas. That kind of leg either confirms your leadership or exposes it.
What Jordan gave him went beyond the miles. Adamson has written openly that Jordan gave him something he hadn't had since his father died, which was unconditional belief. Not belief contingent on performance. Just belief, expressed by entrusting him with a family, a flagship vessel, and a world-spanning voyage. Those months were also a front-row education in how a genuinely instinctive entrepreneur thinks and decides when the stakes are real.
Rebuilding Oyster Yachts
Oyster Yachts entered administration in February 2018 following a structural failure involving the keel of an Oyster 825, which sank off the coast of Spain. In a market where clients cross oceans with their families aboard, structural credibility is the irreducible currency. The backers withdrew, roughly 380 skilled jobs went, and 26 customers with yachts already in build faced an uncertain future.
Richard Hadida acquired the company in March 2018 and recruited Adamson, who served first as Chief Transformation Officer and then as Chief Commercial Officer through December 2022. His entry point was a business with no active order book, a damaged brand, and a global client base with real reasons not to trust.
The turnaround took more than a new sales strategy. Every new Oyster was certified to Lloyds Register SSC Rules, which gave independent verification and removed the structural anxiety from every purchasing conversation. Adamson positioned his team as peers to their clients rather than as vendors, because those clients were founders and CEOs who understood failure and responded to straight talk instead of marketing. He also identified a demographic shift already in motion, with luxury motorboat owners moving toward sail, and opened a pipeline of buyers who had never been in the Oyster market before.
- Forward order book moved from £0 to more than £185 million in under four years
- Annual revenue doubled year over year across his tenure
- All 26 legacy customers with yachts in build at administration received their vessels
- Three new models launched, with the Oyster 565 and 595 breaking previous order records
- Workforce rebuilt from near zero to approximately 600 people
He didn't talk about trust and then go home. He rebuilt it one conversation at a time inside a brand the market had good reasons to walk away from.
Lighthouse Training
Adamson founded Lighthouse Training in October 2009. The name came from a specific night navigating toward a dark coastline with complete electrical failure aboard. No GPS, no radar, no screens. He scanned the horizon for anything fixed, and when a lighthouse beam finally swung across the water, something settled. He knew exactly where he was, and all he had to do was follow the light home.
That's the leadership model. Under volatility, teams don't look to strategy documents. They look to their leader's operational and emotional state. A leader who projects calm, cuts through noise, and gives people a reliable point of reference doesn't eliminate the storm. They make it navigable.
- Leaders create momentum through clear decisions rather than perfect information
- Teams execute best when alignment and energy are addressed before strategy
- Growth requires leaders to evolve how they lead without abandoning who they are
Since February 2023 he has served as Trusted Advisor to The Shed Distillery of PJ Rigney, creators of Drumshanbo Gunpowder Irish Gin. During his tenure the business has expanded into 100 international markets, grown past 120 people, doubled whiskey-making capacity, and reported FY2025 turnover of €17.99 million. He didn't arrive with a slide deck and a rebrand. He embedded in the leadership layer and kept the founder clear-headed through the growth phase that typically produces chaos.
Leadership in Dentistry
Adamson is married to a practising dentist, and together they are partners in a growing UK dental group. That gives him direct exposure to the pressures of practice ownership, clinical team leadership, growth, and patient care, and a credibility that external speakers can't replicate. His entry into the wider sector came through Dr. Arun K. Garg, founder of Implant Seminars, who has trained over 20,000 clinicians globally.
He works with practice owners whose businesses have grown more complicated than their leadership approach can support. Decisions start collecting at the top. Communication gets slower and heavier. Capable team members wait for direction because too much still depends on the owner. The singular drive and centralised decision-making that built the practice have quietly become the things holding it back.
His lane isn't broken practices. It's good practices that have become harder to run than they should be. The typical dental speaker is a clinician, a practice consultant, a marketer, or a coach. Adamson occupies none of those lanes. He helps owners become steadier leaders under pressure. Not louder, not more performative, steadier. Almost nobody else is making that offer inside this industry.
He has delivered leadership and culture programmes for Implant Seminars, the International Dental Implant Association, Titanium Partners Mastermind, Rodericks Dental Partners, Blue Sea Dental, and the Hakim Group, where he keynoted to a 1,500-person team alongside Sir Gordon Messenger and Clive Anderson.
Resilience Tested Personally
Adamson left Oyster in December 2022, two weeks before his diagnosis arrived. In October of that year he was diagnosed with Stage IIIA follicular lymphoma, a blood cancer currently classified as incurable. He completed three rounds of chemotherapy and is currently in remission.
He had spent years building a public philosophy around exactly this kind of moment. How to stay calm when the outcome is genuinely uncertain. How to choose your focus when every instinct says catastrophise. That philosophy was now being stress-tested with his own body as the variable.
In November 2023, the Follicular Lymphoma Foundation invited him to deliver the keynote at their inaugural Invisible Incurable Gala in London. He told the whole story, and the evening raised more than £550,000 for research and patient support.
I have spoken on many stages over the years. Last night was simply the most important keynote I have ever delivered.
Paul Adamson, November 2023
The experience changed the depth of his work rather than becoming a product within it. When he speaks now about uncertainty, resilience, or the weight leaders carry privately, he's drawing on business, the sea, and hospital corridors.

Faculty Focus
Adamson's work with Foundation Dental Alliance covers:
- Leading calmly and decisively under pressure
- Creating team alignment before implementing strategy
- Making decisions without perfect information
- Reducing the owner bottleneck in a growing practice
- Building accountability without damaging trust
- Strengthening practice culture and patient experience
- Helping leaders evolve as their organisations grow
- Communicating clearly during uncertainty and change
- Developing resilience without ignoring the weight of leadership
Most advisors add more process. Adamson removes noise. Most speakers raise the energy for a day. He gives a team language that stays with them for years. Most consultants diagnose the business. He diagnoses the pressure underneath it. He also understands loneliness at the top, not as a concept but as something he lived at sea, where the skipper's responsibility is non-transferable and the weight of the boat and everyone aboard sits with one person. At Foundation Dental Alliance, he helps dentists become steadier leaders, build stronger teams, and create forward momentum without carrying every decision alone.
