Mastering Conflict Resolution.

When you avoid conflict, small issues become big problems.
When you mishandle conflict, trust erodes.
When you master it, your team becomes stronger.
Here’s what gets in the way:
• Lack of Training - Most dentists were never taught how to lead people.
• Fear of Emotions - We’re wired to avoid discomfort and tension.
• Poor Timing - Waiting too long makes it harder to address the real issue.
That’s why having a clear, repeatable system for conflict resolution is one of the most valuable leadership tools you can develop.
The Foundation Conflict Resolution Framework
A 4-Step Structure to Resolve Issues with Clarity and Confidence
1. Prepare - Don’t React
• Identify the specific behavior or issue - not the person’s personality
• Avoid conversations when emotions are high
• Set the stage for clarity, not conflict
2. Use the “Observation + Impact” Method
• Example: “I’ve noticed that morning setups have been starting late. That puts pressure on the whole team and creates a stressful environment.”
• Be specific, factual, and calm
3. Ask for Their Perspective
• Don’t assume - ask: “What’s been getting in the way?” or “How do you see this?”
• Listen without interrupting
• Their answer may point to a broken system, not a personal flaw
4. Create a Clear Path Forward
• Set expectations: “Let’s commit to having operations ready by 7:50 AM”
• Ask for buy-in: “Does that feel fair to you?”
• Set a time to check back in and reinforce progress
Key Mindset: Curiosity, Not Judgment
Approach conflict as a leader, not a critic.
The goal isn’t to punish - it’s to align.
You’re solving a problem together - not attacking a person.
When people feel heard, they’re more likely to change.
When they feel judged, they shut down - or push back.
Leadership Script for Difficult Conversations
Opening:
“I want to talk with you about something I’ve observed, and I’d like to get your perspective.”
Observation:
“I’ve noticed [specific behavior]. The impact is [specific consequence].”
Inquiry:
“Help me understand what’s happening from your point of view.”
Resolution:
“Moving forward, here’s what I need to see: [specific expectation]. Can we agree on this approach?”
Follow-up:
“Let’s check in on this again next week to see how it’s going.”
Final Thought
Conflict doesn’t have to be toxic.
Handled well, it becomes a tool for clarity, growth, and stronger relationships.
If your team avoids conflict, problems pile up.
But when you address issues with empathy and directness…
Your culture transforms.
And your leadership becomes real.
The best leaders don’t avoid difficult conversations.
They turn them into breakthrough moments.
