Transition Nobody Prepares You For.

When I sold my practice, I thought I was ready.
I understood the business side.
I had advisors.
The numbers made sense.
What I wasn’t prepared for was how personal it felt.
This wasn’t just an asset changing hands. It was decades of decisions, relationships, responsibility, and identity wrapped into one place. It was the staff who trusted me. The patients who grew up in the practice. The routines that shaped my life for years.
And the industry does a terrible job preparing dentists for that reality.
Most conversations jump straight to the deal.
Very few address the human cost of getting it wrong.
Why Dentists Wait Too Long
Here’s what I’ve seen - in my own journey and in dozens of transitions since:
Most dentists don’t start planning their exit until something forces them to.
Burnout.
Health issues.
A surprise offer.
A key associate leaving.
At that point, you’re not planning.
You’re reacting.
And reaction is the most expensive way to transition - financially, emotionally, and professionally.
Clarity Beats Readiness
Bad transitions happen when you’re ready to be done.
Good transitions happen when you’re clear on what you want.
Clear about:
- How involved you want to remain
- What culture matters to you
- What you want protected
- What you’re actually retiring to, not just away from
That kind of clarity doesn’t show up overnight.
It takes time. Conversations. Reflection.
And when it exists, everything changes.
What Vision Actually Does
Vision isn’t a dream board.
It’s engineering with feeling attached.
It’s a strategic filter that turns emotion into architecture.
It turns:
- “I’m tired” into “I need systems that run without me”
- “I’m nervous” into “I need options”
- “I feel stuck” into “I need a five-year runway”
I spent five to six years intentionally obsoleting myself from my practice.
Not because I wanted to disappear.
Because I wanted the transition to work - for my team, my patients, and myself.
This wasn’t about losing my identity.
It was about allowing it to evolve.
When real-life challenges showed up - and they always do - we had options.
That’s what preparation buys you.
The Truth Nobody Says Early Enough
Your transition does not start when you sign an LOI.
It starts the day you buy or build your first practice.
Every hire.
Every system.
Every associate agreement.
All of it shapes your exit - whether you plan for it or not.
You can build something fragile.
Or you can build something transferable.
The difference is vision.
Why This Matters Now
If you’re five to ten years out, this is your window.
Not to rush.
Not to sell.
But to get clear.
Because the dentists who transition well don’t panic.
They prepare.
They don’t lose leverage.
They build it quietly over time.
Why We Built Foundation Dental Transitions
This is why Brian Mans and I built Foundation Dental Transitions.
Not to rush dentists to market.
But to help them get clear - even if that takes months or years.
Because clarity on the front end saves years of regret on the back end.
And it’s why the Foundation Dental Alliance exists - to give dentists a true roadmap, from graduation to retirement.
So you don’t have to figure this out alone.
Closing Thought
The best transitions aren’t surprises.
They’re rehearsed quietly, years in advance.
And they start the moment a dentist chooses vision over urgency.
That’s the transition nobody prepares you for.
And that’s why vision changes everything.
